Movie Review: We Are Marshall (2006) PDF Print E-mail

Image This is the adaptation of the true story of the demise and rebirth of the Marshall University football program after a plane crash kills 99% of the players and coaches and support staff.

Hands down, one of the best sports movies I've ever seen.  Based on a true story, We Are Marshall delivers a heart-wrenching story of love, loss and the undying human spirit.  Although slow in portions, the movie's emotional impact and the enormity of the plane crash on this small mountain town affects you to the very core of your humanity.

Matthew McConaughey is perfect as a somewhat corny but determined replacement coach who understands his job clearly, even when others don't.  He's not a miracle worker, he's just a regular Joe Schmoe who loves coaching, and in no way does he expect to turn the Marshall program around in one year.  Against opposition from all sides, he administers the remedy the ailing town needs in a very real way.  Slowly and painfully.

I cried at least four times during this movie, and if you have any heart, you will too.

Verdict:  Image
